Weights AI: the company that joined OpenAI, Weights & Biases, and what model weights actually are

Search Weights AI and you hit three different things with almost the same name. One is a consumer studio that shut down after joining OpenAI. One is Weights & Biases, the experiment tracker now inside CoreWeave. One is the actual idea of "weights": the numbers a neural network learned during training. This page separates them, then explains why marketers can ignore two of the three.
1. Weights.com, the studio that joined OpenAI
Weights (weights.com, sometimes searched as Weights AI) was a place to generate and share images, video, music and small trained models. The company said more than five million people used the products. In 2026 it announced that Weights and its team were joining OpenAI, and that the products had been wound down. If a bookmark still opens, you will see that message, not a working studio.
If that is the Weights AI you wanted, you need a replacement for image and video generation, not a research platform. In Content24 that work sits in AI Images and AI Video, next to copy in AI Writer, so a campaign does not live in a tool that can disappear overnight.
2. Weights & Biases, the developer platform
Weights & Biases (W&B, wandb.ai) is a different company. Engineers use it to log training runs, compare models, version datasets and watch LLM agents. CoreWeave completed its acquisition of Weights & Biases in May 2025. Through 2026 the product has been folding into CoreWeave Forge. Existing accounts and API keys were kept. Free, Pro and Enterprise SaaS sign in moved to CoreWeave Forge in September 2026. Self hosted setups stayed as they were.
If you are a machine learning team, that is your Weights AI. If you run a marketing team, you do not need an account. You are not training models. You are prompting them.
3. What "weights" means inside a model
This is the meaning that lasts after the brand names change. A neural network is a pile of simple math. During training it sees examples and nudges millions or billions of small numbers so that the next prediction is slightly less wrong. Those numbers are the weights. After training, the weights are the model. GPT, Claude, Gemini, Flux: each file you hear about is mostly weights, plus some code that knows how to run them.
- Training writes the weights. That takes huge clusters and lots of data. Almost no marketing team does this.
- Inference reads the weights to produce the next token, pixel or frame. That is what happens when you click Generate.
- Fine tuning starts from existing weights and nudges them on your data. Still rare for in house marketing, and easy to get wrong.
- Open weights means the numbers are published so others can run or adapt the model. Open weights are not the same as open data or an open licence for your commercial use. Read the licence.
If you already read our note on AI tokens meaning, this is the other half of the bill. Tokens are how the model counts input and output. Weights are the model itself. You pay for tokens because running the weights on a GPU is not free.
What this changes for marketing teams
- You do not pick weights. You pick a product that already picked a model, or a workspace that lets you switch models without retraining anything.
- When a consumer studio shuts down (as Weights.com did), anything you only stored there is gone. Keep brand assets in a workspace you control.
- "Open weights" on a landing page does not mean you can put the outputs in ads. Check the licence and your own brand rules.
- Experiment trackers like W&B are for people who train. If your team is prompting, you want brand voice, approvals and channel variants, not loss curves.
Inside Content24 you choose among image, video and writing models from one brief. You do not download weights, log runs or babysit a GPU. That is the point of a marketing workspace rather than an MLOps platform. See also AI engines if you want the difference between a model and the app wrapped around it.
Frequently asked questions
Is Weights AI still available?
The consumer Weights products are not. The team joined OpenAI and the studio was wound down. Weights & Biases is still available as part of CoreWeave. The two were never the same company.
Are open weights free to use in ads?
Not automatically. Open weights means you can often run the model. Commercial use, attribution and whether you may use generated people or brands in advertising sit in the licence and in the law of your country. Read both.
Do I need to understand weights to use ChatGPT or Content24?
No. It helps to know that the model is a big file of numbers, that tokens are how you pay to run it, and that you are not training it when you write a prompt. That is enough.
The short version
Weights AI is a messy search. The studio is gone. Weights & Biases is for people who train models. The useful idea for everyone else is that weights are the model, and you run them through a product. For image, video and copy without standing up a training stack, start with Content24 for free.
