ElevenLabs is the voice tool marketers mean when they say the read sounds like a person and not like a phone menu. You paste a script, pick a voice, and download audio. The company also designs new voices, clones a voice from a recording, makes sound effects, and has added music generation. The reason the name is a search term is still the voice. Everything else is a later room in the same building.
Teams use it when a video needs a presenter and there is no time to book one, or when the same script has to exist in several languages by Friday. The multilingual voices are the practical feature. A line that was approved in English can be read in German or Spanish without a second casting session. The translation still needs a human who speaks the language. A fluent voice can say a wrong idiom with total confidence.
The four things people open it for
Text to speech is the default. You write the line, you choose a stock voice, you fix the pauses. Voice design is for when none of the stock voices fit the brand and you want a new one described in words. Voice cloning is for a specific person: a founder, an actor you hired, a character you own. Sound effects and music are for the bed around that voice, and they overlap with what a library like Artlist already sells as recorded tracks.
Do not treat those four as equal risk. A stock voice is a license question you can read on their pricing page. A clone is a consent question. Record a voice only when the person has agreed, in writing, to that use. A colleague who once read a podcast has not agreed to be the voice of every ad this quarter. A customer in a testimonial has not agreed to a synthetic version of themselves. If you cannot point at the permission, do not clone the voice.
How to get a read that does not sound automated
Write the line for the ear. Short sentences. One idea each. Numbers and web addresses spelled the way you want them said. If the model rushes a price, rewrite the price as words or add a pause, instead of generating the same paragraph ten times and hoping. Mark a word you need stressed. Most of the "it sounds like AI" complaints are a script that was written for a page, then pasted into a player.
Listen on the same speaker the ad will use. Laptop speakers hide a hiss and a weird breath that a phone speaker will feature. Then listen once more with the picture. A perfect read over the wrong clip still fails. The voice should enter when there is something to say, not from the first frame to the last. Silence is allowed.
- The script is final before you spend credits on takes.
- Names, prices, and the brand are pronounced the way the company says them.
- A cloned voice has written permission for this exact use.
- The language was checked by someone who speaks it.
- The music under the voice is licensed for an ad, not just for a demo.
What it does not do
It does not decide the offer. A warm voice can sell a claim you are not allowed to make, and it will sound more trustworthy than the same claim in a caption. Legal review belongs on the script, before the pretty read makes everyone reluctant to change a word.
It also does not cut the film or keep the brand voice in one place across email, the site, and the ad. If the spoken line and the on screen line disagree, customers believe whichever one they saw last. Write them together. A separate note on music for ads, when the bed matters as much as the voice, is in AI music for ads and social.
Where it sits in a week of work
Open ElevenLabs when the picture is far enough along that you know what the voice has to cover, and when you know whose voice you are allowed to use. Generate two takes, not twenty. Pick one. Then put it under the cut in the editor, whether that is CapCut or a heavier timeline.
If the same script also has to become the caption, the email, and the landing line, do that next to the audio instead of in a fresh chat that will paraphrase the offer. AI Writer is where the line starts. AI Audio is where a marketing team keeps the sound with the rest of the campaign, so the approved sentence and the approved read do not drift apart.
